Text: Located off Tulls Creek Road near the Currituck Sound. Also known as the Herman Ballance place. This view of the old house, before it was remodeled, shows Mr. Ballance and his dogs in the snow. There is a very old cemetery located just back of the house in which, among others, is buried Dr. David Jones, believed to have married Mary Baxter, daughter of Joshua Baxter. In his will (Currituck Will Book 3) probated at February Term 1823, he mentions, among others, his daughter, Mary C. Ferebee, to whom he gives "land on Currituck Shore, being her mother's maiden land." To Dr. E.D. Ferebee he gave the note of $180 "or upwards, also all other debts he may owe me, also all my medical books and stock of Medicine, shop furniture, instruments, etc.", and he made Dr. Ferebee guardian of his daughter, Bridget Elizabeth. He willed that "Three plain marble slabs to be placed at the head of each of my wives and the other at my own". |
