This family appears in two 1850 census records. The first was on 12 August 1850 in Parma Township, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, and the second is on the 24th of August in Ward 2, Cleveland Ohio. Parma is a suburb of Cleveland. The census on the 12th of August gives the head of the household as "John", while the census on the 24th of August gives the head of the household as "James". In the second census of the 24th, a son, James, age 21, has moved in with the family and Mary E. McKnight, age 14, has left.
The 1850 Cuyahoga Ohio Federal Census gives his name as James, whereas the 1860 Cuyahoga Ohio Federal Census gives the head of household as "John". The 1860 census also names the birthplace of John and Rebecca as "England", not Ireland as in the 1850 census.
