Glasgow Herald - Friday 09 June 1899, p6:
THE LATE MR A E MACKNIGHT, ADVOCATE –
Mr Alexander Edward Macknight, advocate, died at his residence, 47 Albany Street, Edinburgh, yesterday – Deceased who was over 80 years of age, was the fourth son of the late Rev Thomas Macknight, DD, minister of the Old Church, Edinburgh, and Moderator of the General Assembly in 1820, and for some years clerk to the Assembly. His grandfather was the Rev Thomas Macknight, DD minister of the Old Church, Edinburgh, and Moderator of the General Assembly in 1769, and the author of “Harmony of the Gospels” and other works. Mr Macknight was called to the Bar in 1841, but does not appear to have gone into practice. He was a good classic scholar and modern linguist, and he had also no mean skill with the violin. He was at one time a member of Edinburgh Town Council, and of the City Parochial Board, Edinburgh, and he on more than one occasion aspired to Parliamentary honours as an advanced Liberal.
